Civil society to forward EU Drugs Action PlanIn recognition of the UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and just two days after the European Council adopted the Drugs Action Plan for 2005-2008, experts from around Europe met at the Church of Scientology International European Human Rights Office in Brussels on Wednesday, June 29, to define concrete actions for making the plan a reality. The conference, organized by the Foundation for a Drug-Free Europe, was the first in a series of initiatives of civil society to help all levels of government make significant progress in the fight against drugs across the continent over the next three years. This initiative was warmly welcomed by attendees, including officials of several of the Permanent Representations of the Members States to the European Union. The purpose of the Foundation for a Drug-Free Europe is to unite and coordinate the efforts of members of civil society involved in the fight against drugs in Europe. Among the members, and internal and external expert advisors of the Foundation, are a diversity of people of different ideological, religious and cultural backgrounds, who have a shared goal of ridding society of the drug epidemic. |
